It’s difficult to describe what happened over these few days. I trecked up to Edinburgh to follow Barnsley Youth Choir around for a few days – simple enough. I definitely put the steps in. And judging by the craziness going on around me, it was definitely the Fringe.
But what happened between arriving and leaving was, well, a bit magical. 170 singers descended on Greyfriars in the centre of Edinburgh, performing 13 concerts over 10 days. 170 of Barnsley’s finest – flyering, rehearsing, performing in random public spaces, hugging, more performing, huddling, laughing, crying, more hugging…. You get the idea.
Their performances were simply mesmerising. The balance between energy, control, emotion and discipline is something which needs to be witnessed. The title of the tour was ‘Spirit’ which gives you an idea of what you’re about to be bombarded with. Just sit back and let it wash over you.
But it’s what goes on behind the scenes which makes it special. The people who make this happen are awe inspiring. No one is left wanting, no one is left behind and the energy this creates is astounding.
This is simply a big group of utterly inspirational people.
I’m not going to name names, it’s impossible – I’d end up with a big long list, and it’s not the point.
Here are just a small handful of images from the 3 days I was there.
Barnsley Youth Choir – thank you.
